L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship (FWiS)

The Dutch L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship program stimulates the scientific careers of talented young women in Life Sciences and STEM with the aim of increasing the number of women professors in Netherlands in the long run. The fellowship constitutes a national initiative within the International For Women in Science program sponsored by L'Oréal and UNESCO and supported by the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH).

About the FWiS Fellowships

Even though women increasingly attain the highest academic levels, they are still under-represented at the top levels of scientific research. With the introduction of the Dutch Fellowship For Women in Science in 2013, L’Oréal, UNESCO, the Dutch Network of Women Professors and NIAS commit to promoting scientific careers and identifying outstanding women scientists.

Every other year, four L’Oréal-UNESCO FWiS grants of €30,000 are awarded for residential fellowships of a semester at NIAS. Women scientists, between 3 and 10 years after their doctorate (comparable to Veni/Vidi level) and currently affiliated with a Dutch University or Institute are eligible to apply. The FWiS fellowship at NIAS offers scholars from the Life Sciences and STEM an opportunity to work without interruption on their research and publications. They are a part of an international environment where they can benefit from an exchange of ideas with scholars from humanities and social sciences disciplines. During the fellowship, the fellow may use the remaining grant to attend relevant international meetings, to organise a workshop or to pay for childcare (following consultation with NIAS).
