Accommodation
NIAS accommodation in Amsterdam is spread across three locations. The main building with offices is located in the Korte Spinhuissteeg 3, in the historical city center of Amsterdam. NIAS also offers accommodation on top locations against subsidized rates.
Fellows’ offices
The main building houses the Fellows’ and staff offices, lecture rooms, meeting rooms, the NIAS library, common room and lunch room. This building forms the west wing of the East India House and is just 15 mins walk from Central Station, 2 mins from the Royal Academy-KNAW and across the road from the Meertens and Huygens-ING institutes in the Spinhuis (KNAW’s Humanities Cluster).
NIAS offices are located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the main building. Fellows are each allotted an office with a Personal Computer (Windows) connected to the NIAS network and network printers and a telephone (VOIP). There is a desk, set of drawers, an office chair, a white board, and a book case.
Fellows House: Studio Apartments
The studio apartments for residential fellows are in the historic building of the Fellows House, Kloveniersburgwal 23, a two-minute walk from NIAS’ main building. Fellows, usually those from abroad, are allotted one of the twelve studio apartments. Each studio has a unique layout and styling. Some studio’s have a separate bedroom (with a double bed).
All studios (about 80 m2) have a private bathroom with a separate toilet and a fully equipped kitchenette. Fellows can also use the larger communal kitchen, lounge and a laundry room with two washing machines and two dryers. The inventory includes a double bed, one or two armchairs (depending on the studio), a dining table with chairs and a wardrobe. Each studio also has a TV, telephone and internet connection (both CAT-cable and WiFi). The kitchenette is equipped with a fridge, microwave, small electric cooking stove and a Nespresso machine. Each kitchenette is stocked with a selection of plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery, kitchen utensils and pans. As the kitchenette does not contain a dish washer, a dishpan and drainer are provided for doing the dishes by hand. The communal kitchen does have a dishwasher which you can use. Bed linen and towels are provided for.
Studios are for fellows who come alone or with their partner. The subsidized rate for studio accommodation is €750 per month.
Family Apartments: Amsterdam South
The larger family apartments are a tram ride and short walk away in the popular Stadionplein residential area in the south of Amsterdam. Trams leave regularly from the Stadionplein apartment block to the tram stop Rokin, a 5 minutes’ walk to NIAS.
These fully furnished apartments are near all amenities. The apartments have two bedrooms, a private bathroom with a separate toilet, a fully equipped kitchen and a private balcony. The inventory includes a double bed, a sofa and chairs, a dining table with chairs and wardrobes. Each apartment also has a TV, telephone and internet connection (both CAT-cable and WiFi). The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, microwave, cooking stove and dishwasher, and is stocked with a selection of plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery, kitchen utensils and pans. Bed linen and towels are provided for.
The family apartments are primarily for fellows who bring their children with them. The subsidized rate for apartments is €750 per month.
Apartments: Amsterdam East
As of 2022, NIAS also offers apartments in Amsterdam East. Located next to the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal, the old port of Amsterdam is being rebuilt as a green and spacious residential and working area. The NIAS apartments are housed in the Cruquius Docks project, which in its design and architecture, resembles the brick warehouses of the historical Amsterdam ports. There are four 2-bedroom and one 1-bedroom apartments available.
These fully furnished apartments have a separate bedroom(s), a private bathroom with a separate toilet, a fully equipped kitchen and a large private balcony, sometimes overlooking the water.
As the area is still in development, public transport to and from the area is limited. The nearest tram or bus stop is a 20-minute walk to the apartment. That makes these apartments suitable foremost for fellows that feel comfortable cycling through the city. The subsidized rate for apartments is €750 per month.
Accommodation Elsewhere
The demand for both the studios and family apartments often exceeds the availability. NIAS does its utmost best to provide fellowships to as many fellows as possible, and does not want to reject prospective fellows on the basis of the availability of accommodation alone. This means that NIAS may ask (randomly selected) prospective fellows to seek out and rent temporary accommodation elsewhere in the city. NIAS can assist in finding alternative accommodation, as well as provide a subsidy of max €1.750 per month to cover (part of) the costs.
