NIAS is proud to congratulate the four scientists awarded today with a prestigious For Women in Science (FWiS) Fellowship. The fellowships were awarded to Trang Duong, Jolien Francken, Džemila Šero and Iris Walraven for their exceptional contribution to science.

State Secretary Mariëlle Paul presents For Women in Science Awards

During the festive ceremony at the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam, in the presence of State Secretary for Emancipation Mariëlle Paul, the laureates each received their fellowship. This will enable them to continue their research during a five-month fellowship with us at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, where they will make the most of the academic freedoms that NIAS offers. Relieved of administrative, clinical and teaching duties, they will work on next steps in their careers within our international, interdisciplinary community of researchers.

Founding Partner

As NIAS, we are honoured to contribute as a founding partner to this important initiative, which gives female scientists the recognition they deserve, and contributes to the visibility of female scientific talent in the Netherlands. The fellowships are a joint initiative of the Netherlands Commission for Unesco, Fondation L’Oréal Belgilux & the Netherlands, NEMO Science Museum, the LNVH – Dutch Network of Women Professors and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS).

The world needs science, science needs women

The prestigious international ‘For Women in Science’ programme is a collaboration between several partners with the tagline: ‘The world needs science, science needs women’. The programme awards fellowships and prizes to exceptional female scientists in the field of life sciences. Since 1998, more than 3100 women from 117 countries have received this award.

The Dutch ‘For Women in Science’ fellowship was introduced in March 2012 by the Netherlands Commission for UNESCO and L’Oréal Netherlands in partnership with the Dutch Network of Women Professors LNVH and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS). This year NEMO Science Museum joined our partnership.

Life sciences and STEM-disciplines

Fellowships are awarded to women scientists who conduct research in life sciences and STEM-disciplines. The grants are intended to advance the academic careers of women researchers with 3-10 years of post-PhD academic experience and offer women researchers the opportunity to work within the interdisciplinary, international academic environment at NIAS in Amsterdam, away from the distractions of regular administrative and teaching tasks so that they can focus on broadening their research and writing publications or grant proposals. The For Women in Science programme aims to help women progress in their scientific careers and contribute to an increase in the number of female professors in The Netherlands.
