NIAS and the Dutch Foundation for Literature open fellowship call for writers from the Dutch Caribbean

A room of one's own, in Amsterdam

6 July 2026

Writing a book takes time most writers struggle to find. Between day jobs, deadlines and the daily pull of family and community, the space to think, really think, about a single project for months on end is rare. Rarer still is access to that space alongside scholars who can challenge, sharpen and enrich the work in progress.

That is exactly what the Nederlands Letterenfonds Fellowship offers. And this year, for the first time, NIAS and the Dutch Foundation for Literature are explicitly reserving it for a writer based in the Dutch Caribbean.

Filling the gap

Literary infrastructure in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten has grown significantly in recent years: new schemes, festivals and publishing initiatives are helping (local) stories reach wider audiences. But sustained, funded time to write, five uninterrupted months, remains scarce. This fellowship fills that gap.
