Distinguished Lorentz Fellow Richard Gill lectures at Studium Generale

1 November 2010

On Monday, 1 November 2010 Richard Gill, Distinguished Lorentz Fellow 2010/11, will give a lecture entitled “Lies, damned lies … medical facts and legal truths”. The lecture is organised by Studium Generale, an initiative of Leiden University, and is part of the lecture series “Wel/Niet: beslissen in een wereld vol onzerkerheid” [Is/Isn’t: decision-making in a world of uncertainty].

Richard Gill will speak about a few cases that involve situations in which doctors and judges have to make decisions based on extreme uncertainties, such as in the trial of Lucia de B. Through combining coincidence, law and medicine, Gill will demonstrate the pitfalls of judgments based on the interpretation and misinterpretation of statistics and try to explain the patterns of such decision-making.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion.  Entrance is free and no registration in advance is needed. For more information, click here.
