NIAS Fellow Susan Hekman speaks at symposium

25 October 2010

On Monday, 25 October 2010 Susan Hekman, NIAS Fellow 2010/11, will speak at the symposium “What’s the Matter with Materialism”, organised by the Centre for the Humanities (CfH) and Gender Studies of Utrecht University. The symposium, which falls under the CfH theme “Interfaces between the Sciences and the Humanities”, capitalises on the two meanings of ‘matter’.

The symposium will explore the ways in which matter and materialism are currently being conceptualised in both feminist theory and the humanities more broadly. At the same time the symposium title reflects an interest in the importance of materialist approaches by the two academic fields. Why does this new materialism matter, and how might it affect our future research? How can inter-disciplinary research be done from a new materialist perspective? What is new materialism’s distinct methodology?
