NIAS Stands with Central European University

10 April 2017
Legislation has been introduced in Hungary's National Assembly that specifically targets Central European University, one of the most prestigious universities in Central and Eastern Europe. NIAS expresses its strong solidarity with and support to Central European University and its Insitute for Advanced Study in protecting the freedom of higher education and academic research.

NIAS joins a multitude of scientific institutions from Hungary and all over the world in voicing grave concerns regarding the change in legislation which would deprive the Central European University (CEU) of its ability to operate according to fundamental scientific principles such as academic freedom, scientific excellence and self-governance.

CEU has started a petition directed to the Hungarian National Assembly and Government which in the past week was signed by 54,400 individuals. On 9 April, tens of thousands of people marched the streets of Budapest in defense of academic freedom and free universities.
