About NIAS
The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW) is an intellectual haven for international scientists, writers, journalists and artists to pursue their own research interests in a diverse and interdisciplinary environment. A NIAS fellowship offers undisturbed time and space to work on one’s research project, as well as intellectual and informal exchanges with other fellows that stimulate one to reflect, challenge boundaries and explore detours. Annually, about fifty fellows are selected.
NIAS was founded in 1971 and is the oldest independent Institute for Advanced Study in Europe. It is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and located in Amsterdam.

Fellowships are awarded for a period of 5 or 10 months. Applicants have at least three years of post-PhD degree academic experience. Both scholars with or without an affiliation at universities/research institutes can apply.
