We are looking for a great Director!

27 May 2025
As of May 2026, Jan Willem Duyvendak will retire from his role as Director. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), of which NIAS is part, is now inviting applications to succeed him.

We are seeking an authoritative researcher in the humanities or social sciences. Someone with a state-of-the-art vision on scholarly research and transdisciplinary collaboration. The ideal candidate will have an extensive academic and strategic network, along with outstanding leadership and administrative skills.

Our Director is responsible for the development, positioning, and day-to-day management of NIAS. They will ensure a healthy and sustainable institute, as well as foster a safe and fruitful research community for both fellows and staff.

Candidates should note that, while English is the working language within the fellows’ community, Dutch is the primary language used by the staff, in our external partnerships, and, at least partly, in our societal engagement.

Interested? We look forward to reading your motivation. For the full job description and details on how to apply, please visit the KNAW website.
