What are you looking for?

Vacancy: NIAS looking for volunteering alumni

Vacancy: NIAS looking for volunteering alumni

The NIAS Foundation of Alumni (NFA) and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) are looking for NIAS alumni (x/f/m) to support the NIAS staff towards more attention and care for the social needs of NIAS Fellows. Do you remember that a NIAS fellowship was often academically inspirational, but at the same time could be socially challenging? Do you have some hours to spare and invest in the current NIAS community? Do you live at a convenient distance from our offices and apartments? Then we hope you will join NIAS – once more!
  • up to 4 hours a week
  • as per September 2024
  • at the NIAS premises, elsewhere in the city and/or sometimes via telephone / from home
  • if desired: volunteer’s remuneration according to KNAW rules

Who are we 2024?
In 2016, NIAS moved to the heart of Amsterdam. Much has changed since the days that we were in Wassenaar, but we are still that place of curiosity-driven research that you have been part of – either in the Dutch dunes, or in the bustling center of our capital. In the past years, NIAS has given more and more equal room for individual scholarship on the one hand, and, on the other, academic exchanges and collaborative thinking on transdisciplinary themes such as academic freedom.

These days, approximately 20 dedicated people work for NIAS to recruit and select fellows, to facilitate their arrival, stay and research, to strategically communicate our activities and results, and to raise funds. And, last but not least, to create and foster a both diverse and cohesive research community. To help us make all fellows feel comfortable, we seek your added value.

Your role
By taking part in the current fellows’ community you would identify individual fellows in need of support. Towards and about this, you would be in touch primarily with the Receptionist, the Facility Coordinators and the Head of Academic Affairs. You would pro-actively offer conversation, care or advice to fellows, as they may, e.g., be lonely or unable to find their way in Amsterdam. Each semester, you would furthermore help create and advise the Fellows’ Committee, that organizes outings and events. You would also coach the committee towards a truly inclusive program. You would fulfill these tasks in any relevant place of your choice, such as at the office, the Fellows’ House, elsewhere in the city or via telephone from your home.

Your competencies, apart from the ones we are confident of as you are a NIAS alumnus:

  • a people person with international experience
  • at home in Amsterdam and the Netherlands

Our offer

  • a new position or role at NIAS, that we would together develop and assess
  • membership of a wonderful scholarly community and participation in a vibrant team
  • participation in NIAS public and academic events, as our guest, resp. a listener
  • lunch with the fellows on your working days
  • a desk at NIAS if you wish. You may have to accept that you do not have a desk just for you.
  • remuneration in line with the KNAW rules for volunteers
  • reimbursement of costs you might make for your job
