It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Pieter Muysken, Professor of Linguistics, who passed away on 6 April 2020.
Pieter Muysken was one of the most renowned and productive linguists in the Netherlands. Bringing together research in multilingualism and language contact, his work laid the foundation for a new school in linguistics. His research on creolization, pidgin languages, and disappearing languages in South America and Southern Africa, has been highly influential. His work and enthusiasm inspired many generations of students and scholars. Muysken passed away at the age of 70 as a result of cancer. NIAS was fortunate enough to welcome him to NIAS twice, in 1995/1996 and 2005/06.
