NIAS Podcast: Why many diversity programs backfire

One of Donald Trump's first acts in office was to sign an executive order eliminating diversity initiatives across the federal government. Proponents of these programmes argue that dismantling them undermines efforts to promote equality in workplaces and organisations.

In this podcast, Frank Dobbin discusses the effectiveness of diversity policies in universities and businesses. Not all diversity programmes seem to have the desired effect, but simple measures such as targeted recruitment, formal mentoring and work-life initiatives show robust positive effects on diversity. And some of these initiatives appear to be particularly well equipped to withstand current political developments.

Frank Dobbin
For many years, the American Harvard sociologist Frank Dobbin has been researching how organisations can increase diversity. He spent the past six months as a fellow at NIAS where he researched the effectiveness of diversity policies at universities.
