Journalism has become more racy in recent decades due to the influence of digitalization. At the same time, we see an opposite development, with more attention and space for in-depth and investigative journalism. The latter is fostered by our fellowship. Are you working on a major Dutch-language journalistic work (book, podcast or documentary) that is at an advanced stage? And do you think you would benefit from an interdisciplinary and international exchange? Apply for this fellowship.
As journalist-in-residence, you will have the opportunity to devote five months entirely to your journalistic project and immerse yourself in an intellectually stimulating environment. You will be surrounded by a very diverse group of fellows in terms of academic background, nationality, gender, career stage, etc. The working language at NIAS is English.
Previous journalists-in-residence include Sanne de Boer, who wrote about organised crime in the context of global issues at NIAS. Fleur van der Bij spent five months at NIAS with our journalist-in-residence grant to work on her biography about Loesje, Kasper van Laarhoven researched the Cornelius Haga Lyceum and the way our nation treats minorities amid rising tensions and suspicions, Niels Mathijssen wrote his biography of biography of Poncke Princen, and Mark Lievisse Adriaanse worked on his book on the democratic crisis in today’s liberal democracies. Listen to what radio journalist Saar Slegers has to say about the fellowship here (in Dutch).
