Double Life

11 November 2024
"I listened somewhat distantly to the inner voices in my head, which at first resisted the calm, trying to chase it away with chaos and noise, but as the weeks passed, had to admit defeat and learned to hold their peace."

Writer and philosopher Miriam Rasch stayed at NIAS last academic year. During this residency, she wrote the book Listening Exercises, which was published last month. Miriam Rasch also wrote the article “Double Life” for the Dutch Foundation for Literature, a piece about her experiences at NIAS.

‘I’m going to immerse myself in the Amsterdam writing life for five months,’ I told whoever wanted to hear it. It took me a while to realise that some of my friends and colleagues thought I was preparing for one big sleaze party. NIAS is located a stone’s throw from the Red Light District, so who was stopping me. But the emphasis for me was on writing more than living. Of course, I should have known that life doesn’t let itself be held back – and that that only puts the writing on edge.
