Alternative Channels
My project centers on self-experimentation, a long-standing tradition where physicians and other scientists test remedies, treatments, and prototypes on themselves. This form of single-subject research can overlap with artistic processes such as durational performance, where artists carry out activities with their body for hours, days, even years at a time. In both contexts, self-experiments provide a means to radically reorganize an individual sense of physical and social bodily conventions, often ubiquitous and unnoticed in daily life. Alternative Channels surveys the embodied research of practitioners working across scientific and artistic disciplines, examining self-experimentation as a site of connection between creative and scholarly forms of inquiry.
