Global War, Global Catastrophe

Neutrals and Belligerents in the First World War

Maartje Abbenhuis on how over the course of four years the war tested the on-going sustainability of the international system. Abbenhuis's project integrates the history of neutrality into the existing histories of the First World War from which (at present) it still is removed.

About the Seminar

Maartje Abbenhuis will discuss the draft introduction of her book project entitled Global war, global catastrophe: Neutrals, belligerents and the transformation of the First World War, which she is co-authoring with Prof. Ismee Tames (NIOD, Utrecht University). Prof. Tames will also attend the seminar.
Discussant is Saskia Coenen-Snyder.

This seminar is preceded at 10.45h by a short talk by Joep Leerssen (first-semester fellow), whose encyclopedia on romantic nationalism in Europe has just been published and who would like to present a copy to Jan Willem Duyvendak and the NIAS library. The Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism took ten years to complete and documents over 60,000 cultural expressions (varying from opera to folklore and from monument conservation to language movements) from across Europe – from Iceland to Macedonia and from the Basque Country to Finland. It will be presented officially during a public event on 4 June.

About NIAS Seminars
