"The collaborative approach to knowledge generation is refreshing"

“I would strongly encourage anyone who thrives on collective study to consider submitting a proposal for a Theme Group at NIAS — our own Theme Group on Legal Mobilization will take place this year, focusing on Legal Mobilization, also involving 4 wonderful colleagues.

Apart from the rare opportunity to immerse yourself, free of other obligations, in your own research projects, this collaborative approach to knowledge generation is a refreshing change from the hyper-individualism that is, sadly, so typical of academia, and (in my view) ultimately corrosive at intellectual, societal and personal levels.”

Jeff Handmaker coordinates the theme group 20/21 Legal Mobilization: Analyzing Law-Based Advocacy, which will analyse the potential for strategic legal mobilization as a legitimate means to hold governments, individuals and corporations accountable for violations of human rights, environmental and other laws. The theme group includes Jackie Dugard (University of the Witwatersrand), Daphina Misiedjan (also at the ISS), Frederiek de Vlaming (University of Amsterdam) and Margarethe Wewerinke-Singh (Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Leiden University). Handmaker is Senior Lecturer in Law, Human Rights and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
