What is the nature of the Dutch welfare state and how to make sense of its different interpretations throughout the last fifty years? On 24 June 2013, Professor and “icon of Dutch sociology” Kees Schuyt held his inaugural lecture at the Erasmus University Rotterdam on the welfare state, and argues that the Dutch welfare system has never managed to distinguish between needs and desires.
