Fellowships

NIAS offers an intellectual haven for researchers, writers, journalists and artists to pursue their research or projects, to work in an interdisciplinary environment and to share their knowledge with society. Participating in NIAS’ international and interdisciplinary community inspires the generation of new approaches and ideas that will bring ground-breaking work to fruition. Each year, a new group of about 50 fellows is formed.

  • What NIAS offers

NIAS offers an intellectual haven to a diverse year group of international scientists, writers, journalists and artists and provides these NIAS Fellows with the opportunity to devote themselves to an independent research project of their own design. Each year, NIAS hosts around fifty fellows.

    Institutional collaboration in difficult times
  • Commitment, rules & regulations and practical matters

A Fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study is a residency in the true sense of the word: fellows commit themselves to withdrawing from their daily obligations to concentrate fully on their research in a multidisciplinary, international environment.

    Practical Matters
  • Individual Fellowships

NIAS offers fellowships to scholars who wish to carry out research in the humanities and the social sciences. For five or ten months, scholars are offered the time and space to work on a topic of their own choice. Both scholars based in the Netherlands and scholars based abroad can apply for a fellowship.

  • Theme-group Fellowships

For scholars of different backgrounds who wish to collaborate on a particular subject or theme NIAS offers: the NIAS Theme Group Fellowships, the CAT-group fellowship and the NIAS-Lorentz Theme-group Fellowship.
