Open Call for NIAS Individual Fellowships 24/25

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS-KNAW) has opened its annual call for individual fellowship applications. This is an opportunity for scholars who wish to spend 5 or 10 months in the academic year 2024/25 to carry out curiosity-driven research as a member of the interdisciplinary NIAS community in Amsterdam. Deadline is 15 March 2023.

Journalist-in-Residence Fellowship for Niels Mathijssen

Niels Mathijssen has been selected as the next Journalist-in-Residence at NIAS. From February to June 2023, he will focus on researching and writing a biography of Poncke Princen, the Dutch soldier who joined the Indonesian side in their war of independence.

NIAS is seeking an Institute Manager for a max. hours of 30.4 per week. Candidates may submit their CV and letter of motivation until 30 September 2022.

Inge Meijer Researches Houseplants in Museums during NIAS Residency

Visual artist Inge Meijer will be the new Artist in Residence at NIAS. During her fellowship, Meijer will carry out artistic research into the role of plants in art exhibitions up to the 1990s, and into the relationship between art and plants. The fellowship is a programme together with the KNAW's Society of Arts.

Amin Ghaziani, Guest of the Director Summer Stay

Professor of Sociology Amin Ghaziani has been invited to the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study as Guest of the Director. Ghaziani is putting the finishing touches on a new book which focuses on the inventive and imaginative constructions of belonging, particularly for racialized, intersectional, and historically othered groups, as they are occurring in the field of nightlife in London.

Announcing the NIAS Fellows of 2022/23

The NIAS fellows year group 2022/23 includes 56 scholars, writers and artists. They come together at NIAS to pursue their projects in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, slow-science environment.

Journalist-in-Residence Fellowship for Mark Lievisse Adriaanse

Mark Lievisse Adriaanse has been selected for the Journalist-in-Residence fellowship 2022. For five months starting September, he will take a break as political reporter at NRC Handelsblad to fully focus on a book on the democratic crisis in current liberal democracies.

Michael Tedja Selected as New Writer-in-Residence

From September 2022 to February 2023, Michael Tedja will be writer in residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Amsterdam. At the invitation of the Dutch Foundation for Literature and the NIAS, Tedja will work here on his new novel, in which he investigates the history of his artistically creative family.

Carel Stolker New Chair of the NIAS-Lorentz Advisory Board

Carel Stolker, former Rector Magnificus of Leiden University and Professor Emeritus Private Law, is the new Chair of the NIAS-Lorentz Advisory Board, which advises NIAS and the Lorentz Center on ways to bridge the divide between the humanities, social sciences and the natural and/or technological sciences.

For Women in Science Prizes Awarded

During today's award ceremony of the Dutch L'Oréal-Unesco 'For Women in Science' (FWIS) fellowship programme, a wide range of exceptional life scientists were recognised for their innovative ideas, collaborative skills and brilliant work. The festive event took place in the Hodshon House in Haarlem, seat of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, and was moderated by Fadoua Alaoui.

Selin Dilli and Mehrdad Alipour Receive Veni Grant

NIAS Fellows Selin Dilli and Mehrdad Alipour are the recipients of a Veni Grant, one of the major individual grants of the Dutch Research Council. The grant of max 280.000 euro is awarded to excellent researchers who have recently obtained their doctorate to further elaborate their own ideas during a period of three years.

Call for Artist-in-Residence 2023 is Open

NIAS and the Society of Arts invite artists from all fields to apply or get nominated for the the Artist-in-Residence Fellowship 2023. The Artist-in-Residence Programme awards fellowships to artists to spend five months at NIAS working on a project that contributes to cross-fertilisation between the arts and science. The purpose of the residency is to study the theoretical aspects of a subject in-depth.

Open Call for Urban Citizen Fellowships

The call for the Urban Citizen Fellowship is now open. This fellowship stimulates the use of advanced research in political deliberation and public policy making for the city of Amsterdam. Fellowships in 2022 and 2023 are meant to explore the topic of digital urban citizenship. Extended submission deadline: 2 May 2022.
