What are you looking for?

Vacancy: Communication Officer and Intern

Join us: Internship at the heart of science

Are you interested in communicating in English to a very diverse group of international researchers? Would you like to immerse yourself in our quirky science communication? Or perhaps make recommendations to strengthen NIAS's strategic profile as a haven for scientists in distress? Then we hope you'll join us! Our communications department is looking for an intern to start in September 2024.
Who are we?
Each year, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study offers 60 researchers from around the world the opportunity to focus on a topic that, based on their knowledge and experience, they are simply curious about. A topic that they cannot get to in the hustle and bustle of their own university or that is sometimes sensitive in their own country. Our research community has existed for more than 50 years because we see that it is curiosity-driven science that produces the insights and innovations that move the world forward.

There are around 20 enthusiastic people working at NIAS. They facilitate the recruitment and selection of fellows, their transfer and residency, their research and their shared research community. They also focus on communicating our calls for applications, our academic and public activities, and the importance of our mission. NIAS is committed to academic freedom and is an international leader in our field.

What will you do?

You will gain work experience or complete your degree. You will learn the art of communication from our two communications consultants – and they from you! You will raise the profile of NIAS through our website, social media, newsletters, print and events. You will work with your colleagues to find independent roles that match your degree or qualification. For example, until September 2024, our communications will focus on
  • Researching audiences and describing our scholars’ journeys
  • Strengthening the engagement of existing and new partners and funders
  • The inclusive communication of a dozen ‘calls for applications’. More than 300 scientists from around the world apply each year, and we don’t want to exclude anyone

Who are you?

  • You are studying communication at HBO or WO level, possibly as part of another subject
  • You have experience or a strong interest in intercultural and inclusive communication
  • Ideally, you have experience with technical systems of modern communication.
  • You are a dedicated colleague: you are interested, accessible, reliable and motivated.
  • Your English is excellent or (near) native (C1-C2); your Dutch is also good.

What do we offer?

  • A safe learning environment at a prominent scientific institute, and the opportunity to build or expand a professional network from here
  • An environment that recognises the added value of diversity and multilingualism and is committed to equality and inclusion
  • Joining a friendly and dedicated team of permanent, volunteer and freelance staff, and participating in team events such as lunches and the autumn outing
  • An internship contract and an internship allowance of up to €240 (for 32 hours per week; for 5th year or final year internships), as well as internship supervision according to the conditions of your educational institution.
