Exhibition - Stimulating Ambiguity: View-Points on the Soul of Holland

15 May 2011

On Sunday 15 May 2011, at 15.00h, the exhibition ‘Stimulating Ambiguity – View-Points on the Soul of Holland’ by Thomas Coomans, NIAS Fellow 2009/10, will be opened at the Raadhuis de Paauw in Wassenaar. Jan Hoekema, Mayor of Wassenaar, and Aafke Hulk, Rector of NIAS, will speak at the vernissage. The exposition is the result of the stay of Thomas Coomans de Brachène at NIAS.

About the exhibition:

In a striking photo shoot and resulting publication, Thomas Coomans shows the Soul of Holland: Has Calvinist abstraction reformed the Dutch landscape or has abstract harmony of the landscape determined the Faith of Dutch people? The mirroring presence of light and water turns the landscape upside down and leads to humility, indeed, spirituality. In any case, abstraction is present everywhere, in the polders and the dunes, buildings and art. God too, for those seeking him.
