EVERYMAN’S REDEMPTION: RELIGIOUS DISCOURSE AND MEDIEVAL LITERATURE

Focusing on the tradition of Dutch medieval dialogues, I have looked at the interaction and cross-influence of religious discourse and medieval literature. Studying literary phenomena such as =poetic form, text transmission, translation, reading processes, and authorial roles, I have tried to capture the significance of devotional writing for the innovations in the literature of the Low Countries. Working within the theme group Discourses of Meditation and Self-reflection in Art and Literature, 1300-1600, I have presented the discovery of the dialogue in medieval Dutch literature as part of larger cultural processes of lay participation in a life of contemplation and religious meditation.
