Jan Kooij, born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1940. Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Professor of General Linguistics at Leiden University. († 2004)

Fellow (1 September 1983 – 31 August 1984)

My research aimed to contribute to a project on Language Universals sponsored by NIAS and the Max Planck Institute at Nijmegen. This was a comparative study of Topicalization as a syntactic phenomenon, its interaction with word order constraints, and the possibility to describe Topicalization as a formal rule of syntax. Several publications on prosodic phonology were prepared and finalised.
