Legal Mobilization through Cooperation: Seeking Accountability for the International Crimes Committed in the Context of Russia`s War against Ukraine
Research question
How do the legal mobilization and cooperation of civil society actors across borders help to pursue justice for international crimes, particularly in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine?
Project description
The Russian war against Ukraine has mobilised a wide range of civic initiatives aimed at accountability for international crimes, from the documentation of violence and support for survivors to legal education and advocacy for criminal justice reform. Yet the transnational cooperation between civil society actors pursuing criminal justice remains surprisingly underexplored, particularly in the European context.
Iuliia Anosova examines the processes of legal mobilisation that emerge through cooperation among civil society actors situated in different states. More specifically, she analyses the forms and dynamics of collaboration between Ukrainian NGOs engaging with international and national criminal justice institutions, and national NGOs in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom that possess the initiative, resources, and presence to facilitate and sustain these legal efforts. The project aims to produce concrete recommendations for better tools and strategies to enable more effective engagement of national and grassroots organisations in international legal processes through cross-border cooperation.
