Govert den Hartogh, born in 1943. Ph.D. from the university of Oxford. Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam.

In the first place I wrote the introduction to, and annotation of, the first Dutch translation of John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government. Secondly I worked on a book about political obligation and the nature of law, in which I use a conception of social rules (patterns of mutual expectations arising in contexts in which individually rational choices lead to a collectively suboptimal outcome) to shed new light on the old problems of the obligation to obey the law and the relation between law and morality.
