The Making of a 'Euro-Islam': Emerging Courses of Islamic Theology at European Universities

NIAS Seminar

Welmoet Boender examines what types of Islamic interpretations are developed by Muslim religious scholars working at state- and private universities in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, and the United Kingdom.

About the Seminar

In her seminar, Welmoet Boender will discuss the first draft of a paper that discusses the current state of institutional, intellectual and didactical integration of Islamic Theology at publicly funded Western European universities. Her account shows how the programs are positioned in shifting domains of religious, academic, political, social and cultural legitimacy. Written as a ‘mapping study’, the paper will offer a contextual, analytical and comparative framework for an evaluative, evidence-based discussion of the emergence of Islamic Theology as a new scientific field.

About NIAS Seminars

NIAS Seminars are aimed to stimulate scientific cross-pollination within the NIAS academic community, but seminars are open to others who are interested. Please  if you wish to attend.
