Debt & Financial Scarcity

NIAS Seminar

Maria Kaika, Professor in Urban Regional and Environmental Planning at the University of Amsterdam, and Wilco van Dijk, Professor of Psychology at Leiden University, will hold a seminar on both of their research projects that center around debt and financial scarcity.

Debt as Biopolitics

1) Which changes in actors and socio-cultural practices catalyzed increase in household debt?
2) What is the everyday impact of debt defaults along gendered, racialised and class/social status lines (deterioration in health, community and family relations, homelessness etc)?
3) What are the community family and personal practices developed to curtail debt defaults?

The Impact of Financial Scarcity on Decision-Making

What are the psychological effects of having too little money to make end meets? And how do these affect people’s choices and decisions? These are two questions that the current project tries to answer in its research on the impact of financial scarcity on decision-making.
