NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences) is committed to promoting curiosity-driven research for established and early career scholars: an intellectual haven where scholars, artists, writers and journalists come together in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

Deliberation is the driving force behind scientific research and the production of scientific knowledge. Academic freedom and the safety of researchers are crucial in this regard. The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) places great value on curiosity-driven research.

NIAS is engaged in partnerships with several public and private organisations to encourage its community of researchers, scholars and academics share ideas and collaborate. NIAS is a also member of two international networks with sister Institutes for Advanced Study.

NIAS is the Netherlands’ only independent institute for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1970 and opened its doors to the first group of fellows in 1971, making it the first institute of its kind in Europe and the third of its kind in the world.

NIAS Fellows write books, chapters, journal and conference papers as well as articles in newspapers and popular scientific magazines. Currently there are over 1200 books and 1200 articles and chapters in the NIAS Catalogue. They are a testimony to the volume and variety of work that has been produced at NIAS.
