Mitja Velikonja, born in Šempeter pri Gorici, Slovenia, in 1965. Ph.D. from the University of Ljubljana. Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Ljubljana.

YUGOSLAVIA AS THE OTHER – IDEOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION OF YUGOSLAVIA IN PRESENT DAY DISCOURSES IN SLOVENIA

As a NIAS Fellow I was a member of the research theme group “The Real and the Imagined in the Contemporary Balkans”. Staying at NIAS gave me the opportunity to work on my two research projects in the field of Cultural Studies: on retro-motifs in contemporary Slovenian popular music, and on (anti)-Balkan graffiti and street art in Slovenia. I’m very satisfied with the progress that I made here. Results of my researches will be published in English, Slovene and Serbo-Croatian scientific publications, and were already presented at the final conference of our theme group at NIAS in June 2012 and in two academic institutions in The Netherlands (in April and June 2012). An important contribution to my research here was the interaction with other members of the Balkan theme group, and also with other NIAS Fellows.
