LANGUAGE-IN-EDUCATION PLANNING IN WEST AFRICA

My research at NIAS focused on the language-in-education policy and practice in the Anglophone West African countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia and Sierra Leone. It examines the challenges of the language-in-education policy and explores the feasibility of a reform of education policy in West Africa with an emphasis on mother tongue-based bi/multilingual education. During my stay at NIAS, I completed the first draft of the eight chapter book. I also completed a paper entitled “The role of language planning in poverty alleviation in West Africa” which has been submitted to a special issue of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language on the theme ‘Language issues in development’.
