THE DISAPPEARANCE OF MASS UNEMPLOYMENT IN EUROPE

During my three-month stay at NIAS I spent most of my time preparing the Duisenberg Lecture, delivered in Amsterdam on February 28, 2008. Preparatory work included gathering and processing four different micro datasets available at the European level: the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), the European Labour Survey (ELFS), the EU-SILC (Survey of Income and Living Conditions) and the Eurobarometer. A number of public opinion survey were also analysed.

Most of this dataprocessing work was aimed at reconstructing work histories and transition across labour market states in the EU countries exploiting the longitudinal features of some datasets or the retrospective information that they provide. The key idea behind the lecture is that the puzzling dissatisfaction of Europeans with declining unemployment is related to the greater mobility characterizing Continental labour markets. I have used this material for the Duisenberg Lecture.

During my stay at NIAS I also finalized a labour economics textbook with Jan van Ours (Tilburg University) and completed two papers. I also made progress on a paper on corruption and media concentration, drawing on Calciopoli, a major scandal in the Italian soccer First Division.
