NIAS: Fifty Years of Academic Freedom

Anniversary publication out now

15 October 2021
For its 50th anniversary, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences presents an historical narrative of the establishment, importance and endurance of fifty years of academic freedom at the Institute.

Despite, but also because of, some major internal and external threats, the Institute’s mission to be an intellectual haven for scholarly and artistic research and to foster curiosity-driven research, stands as strong today as it did in the year of its birth in 1971.
