Giving: practical matters

There are multiple ways to support NIAS—during your lifetime or through your will. As part of KNAW, NIAS is designated as a Public Benefit Institution (ANBI) by the Dutch tax authorities. This means NIAS is exempt from gift and inheritance tax. For donors in the Netherlands, this status provides financial benefits, as you can receive a portion of your donation back through tax deductions.

Giving from the U.S.

U.S.-based donors can make tax-deductible contributions to NIAS via the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Friends Fund at Myriad USA. Myriad USA is a public charity under Sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) of the IRC, allowing donors to claim the maximum tax benefits permitted under U.S. law.

How to donate from the U.S.:

Please always include “NIAS” in your donation reference.

Giving in the Netherlands

Donations can be made to:

  • NIAS-KNAW Bank Account: NL19 ABNA 0119 7325 56
  • BIC / SWIFT Code: ABNANL2A
  • Reference: Your name and/or email address

One-off Donations

A single donation is deductible from Dutch income tax if:

  • The total amount donated in a year exceeds €60, and
  • Your total donations amount to 1%–10% of your taxable income.
You may combine donations to multiple charities for this deduction.

Periodic Gifts

Donations are fully deductible from income or corporate tax if:

  • You commit to donating a fixed amount for at least five consecutive years.
  • Your donation is recorded in a private agreement or notarial deed.

The maximum tax-deductible amount is €250,000 per household per year, with a tax benefit of up to 52%, depending on your tax bracket.

Company giving

If you own or co-own a private limited company (BV), you can support NIAS through donations or sponsorships:

  • Donations: Tax-deductible from corporate tax under specific conditions. The maximum deduction is 50% of taxable profit, up to €100,000 per year.
  • Sponsorships: Generally fully deductible from corporate tax.  Tax relief is dependent on the (vennootschapsbelasting or Vpb) rate applicable to your company. In addition to the tax relief, as director and major shareholder, you may also benefit from box 2 income tax savings.

Including NIAS in your will

You can leave a general bequest to NIAS or support a specific initiative (e.g., Safe Haven fellowships). As an ANBI, NIAS is exempt from inheritance tax.
