Weitenberg, J.J.S.

Jos Weitenberg, born in Groningen, the Netherlands, in 1943. Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Professor of Armenian Studies at Leiden University. († 2012)

Fellow (1 September 1997 – 30 June 1998)

During my stay at NIAS I studied the periodisation of the Armenian, so called Philhellene, translations: a group of extremely literal renderings of theological and philosophical texts from Greek. I succeeded in placing such translations into a new perspective, using earlier work of S. Brock and J.P. Mahé. A new classification approach allows us to establish the relative chronology of, in particular, the versions of Philo and Dionysius Thrax more exactly. The net gain of this approach is a more coherent picture of the literary developments in the sixth and seventh centuries.
