Taverne, E.R.M.

Ed Taverne, born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1938. Ph.D. from the University of Groningen. Professor of History of Architecture and Town Planning at the University of Groningen.

Guest of the Rector (1 April 2003 – 30 June 2003)

At the time I was asked to come to the NIAS for three months as a Guest of the Rector, I was working on the first draft for a book on the cultural history of the Netherlands in the period 1973-2000. Due to the very informative discussions with some other Fellows and, not least, the bibliographical facilities of the NIAS, I managed to finish a complete new scheme and content for the book.

In the meanwhile, I did extensive research on the architecture and urbanism of the former German Democratic Republic, as part of my KNAW-lecture on “The death and life of an East German new town: Neustadt/Hoyerswerda”. The improved and annotated text of this lecture will be published by the KNAW in September 2003.
