Stamenov, M.I.

Maxim Stamenov, born in Provadia, Bulgaria, in 1952. Ph.D. from Moscow State University. Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of the Bulgarian Language, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia.

Mellon Fellow (1 February 1999 – 30 June 1999)

During my five months at NIAS I worked on the problem of “Language and Consciousness”. The outcome of my research was presented at two international conferences in Tokyo and London, in Ontario, as well as at Carleton University (Ottawa) and Leiden University.

My main focus during my stay at NIAS became the preparation of fifteen hours of lecturing for a workshop on “Language and Consciousness” given during the Summer Linguistics Workshop of the Linguistic Society of America at the University of Illinois at Urbana, 25-27 June 1999. The content of the workshop lectures forms the core of the project which I have working on for some time now.

I also had ample opportunity to discuss the content of my book with the other Fellows at NIAS. During these discussions I became progressively aware that in order to make my project more accessible to an interdisciplinary audience I must make serious alterations in my initial plan for the book.
