Presser, H.B.

Harriet Presser, born in New York City, New York, USA, in 1936. Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. († 2012)

Fellow (1 September 1994 – 30 June 1995)

During the 1994/95 academic year at NIAS, I read extensively and was immersed in data analysis for my project on “Work Schedules and the American Family.” By July 1995 I had two research papers accepted for publication and two others near ready for submission to journals. I also prepared a proposal to the W. T. Grant Foundation (currently under review) for further research on this topic, utilizing new data. I gave talks in the Netherlands and participated in international activities as co-chair of the Gender and Population Committee of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population. My contact with the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute has generated interest in future collaboration on the issue of nonstandard work schedules in the Netherlands and other European countries, drawing upon the U.S. experience.
