Jadwiga Paja-Stach, born in Rzeszów, Poland, in 1949. Ph.D. from the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. Lecturer in Musicology at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków.(† 2011)

Mellon Fellow (1 February 1996 – 30 June 1996)

During the period of my fellowship in the Netherlands I concentrated on the problem of the polyphony in Willem Pijper’s works. As a result of my study I wrote one chapter of my book about 20th-century polyphony, entitled: “The Polyphonic Structures in Willem Pijper’s works”. In my paper I emphasised Pijper’s individual method of the use of the polyphonic techniques which consists in the fusion of several polyphonic procedures and Pijper’s original ‘germ cell’ principle.

Moreover, I wrote an article about the influences of the romantic and impressionist composers on Pijper’s early works and a short sketch about Willem Pijper’s life.

Furthermore, I gave one lecture, entitled ‘Witold Lutoslawski and the European Musical Tradition’ (Wassenaar, 25 April 1996, in the NIAS Lecture series).
