The purpose of my research project From ‘general grammar’ to ‘general linguistic’. Developments in linguistics around the turn of the century was to arrive at a characterization of some of the developments that took place in linguistic thought in the years 1880-1920 by means of a case study, viz. an investigation into the life and works of the Dutch scholar Jan Marius Hoogvliet (1860-1924).
