Robert Lane, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1917. Ph.D. from Harvard University, Cambridge. Professor of Political Science at Yale University, New Haven.

Fellow (1 September 1982 – 31 August 1983)

I completed two volumes of a work entitled, Markets and Politics: The Human Product. The first volume, The Fragile Hegemony takes as its premise the proposition that human development is the criterion by which economies and polities should be judged. The second volume, Thinking, Wanting, Owning, Enjoying, discusses the cognitive requirements and ‘teachings’ of market and political life, the psychology of materialism, the processes of earning, owning, saving, and the outcomes of these processes in various kinds of satisfaction and dissatisfaction.
