The research that I carried out during the four months spent at NIAS is part of a major research project, ‘Explanation in Universal Grammar’. My contribution was to give a characterisation of conditional and concessive sentences that has cross-linguistic validity, to formulate properties that could be considered as universals and to give an explanation for these properties.
