The research that I carried out during my stay at NIAS was part of a major research project on ‘Explanation in Universal Grammar’ and had the following two objectives: 1) to provide a cross-linguistic study of concessive sentences and 2) to develop a general framework for the semantic analysis of focus particles in a wide variety of languages.
