THE RECEPTION OF NETHERLANDISH ART IN ASIA AND ITS IMPACT ON ASIAN CULTURES

During my stay at NIAS I completed research and wrote a paper on the impact of the Dutch East India Company on Taiwan and China. The results are a 48 page manuscript, “Scratching the Surface. On the Dutch in Taiwan and China.” I presented my results in preliminary, condensed form, at a conference held on 15 January 2010, at NIAS. In addition, I was able to read more broadly on questions of global exchange, interchange, the maritime history of the Indian Ocean, and the history of the Dutch East India Company. This reading will enable me to compose the introduction for the book resulting from our research group’s project. A very brief summary of ideas was presented in the form of an introductory lecture to the conference at NIAS.

I also gave two lectures in Germany and one in Spain. I completed a book review, completed editing a book, and an essay.
