BURGUNDIAN-HABSBURG NOBILITY. NOBLE FAMILIES AND PRINCELY POLITICS, C. 1425-C. 1525
The aim of my NIAS research project was to write some chapters of a book, together with Mario Damen (at NIAS from February-June), on the later medieval nobility of the Burgundian-Habsburg Low Countries. This book would be the concluding monograph of our NWO-funded project, aimed at giving a prosopographical and comparative analysis of the nobility in four principalities (Holland, Zeeland, Brabant and Hainault) in the Burgundian-Habsburg period from ca 1430 to ca 1530. Due to circumstances, the database – an absolute prerequisite for making a quantitative and comparative analysis – had not been finished before the start of my fellowship. Therefore, most of my stay at NIAS was devoted to completing the database. Apart from that, I wrote some papers dealing with several aspects of our general question including one on the development of the Ridderschap [knighthood] as part of the representative estates, and on noble genealogies as an source for noble family consciousness.
