Horst, P.W. van der

Pieter van der Horst, born in Driebergen, the Netherlands, in 1946. Ph.D. from Utrecht University. Professor of New Testament Exegesis, Early Christian Literature, and the Jewish and Hellenistic World of Early Christianity at Utrecht University.

Fellow (1 September 2001 – 30 June 2002)

During my sabbatical leave at NIAS I mainly worked on an English translation of and a commentary on In Flaccum, a work written in Greek in the first century CE by the Jewish scholar Philo of Alexandria, in which he describes the anti-Jewish pogrom in Alexandria in 38 CE. It was a fruitful year in that I not only finished my book on Philo’s treatise but also was able to prepare some other, minor publications. I wrote 5 articles on a variety of subjects (ranging from anti-Samaritan propaganda in ancient Judaism to the Byzantine circus factions’ attitudes towards Jews) and 10 book reviews for various national and international journals. Moreover, I did the finishing touches on a volume of English essays I wrote in the years 1998-2001, which was published in June 2002 by Peeters Publ. in Louvain. The scholar-friendly atmosphere and the facilities at NIAS greatly contributed to the success of my sabbatical.
