Prior to arriving at NIAS, Frans van Waarden and I had developed the plans and programme for the Innovation group to be at NIAS. Upon reflection, I consider the year to have been highly successful.
In addition to collective activities I worked together with Ellen Jane Hollingsworth and Jerry Hage on several research projects involving radical innovations in biomedical science in the UK, France, Sweden, Germany, and the US during the twentieth century. I also gave a number of lectures in Austria, Germany and Bulgaria during the year.
NIAS clearly made useful contributions to our scholarly activities. Without the opportunity to have intense and frequent interaction, which the NIAS environment provided, we certainly would not have been able to make the conceptual and theoretical advances which we achieved during the academic year
