Joan Hemels, born in Heino, the Netherlands, in 1944. Ph.D. from Radboud University Nijmegen. Assistant Professor at Radboud University Nijmegen.

Fellow (1 September 1983 – 31 August 1984)

My main research activity concerned community history. I finished the following publication on the history of the Dutch Association of Newspapers Publishers (Vereniging De Nederlandse Dagblad-pers) between 1908 and 1983 and the meaning of the Dutch daily press for society in the Netherlands since the end of the nineteenth century: De krant in bedrijf. 75 Jaar samenwerking en samenleving. I also worked on a manual for students and scholars who are interested in any aspect of the history of the press and other mass media, propaganda and public opinion. The third research activity concentrated on the history of the Catholic press in the Netherlands, with special attention to pillarization and depillarization as typical Dutch phenomena. Lastly I explored the archives of the national news agency Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau in The Hague.
