SPACES, POLITOGENESIS AND CULTS IN GAUL
Research Question
The development of a new approach known as the archaeology of memory, which studies the reuse of ancient sites, allows us to understand how cult locations are established.
Project Description
The aim of the project is to develop a new approach to studying sacred landscapes that uses the concept of memorial space and to apply this method to a study of Southern and Northern Gaul. This project aims to identify the role that religion and places of worship played in the formation and affirmation of political power in Gaul. The first, and major, part of this project will focus on explaining the phenomenon of ‘recycling’ of ancient Iron Age oppida as Roman sanctuaries in Gallia Narbonensis. This phenomenon is discussed with respect to the memorial perception of Iron Age fortified sites during the Roman period. The second phase of the project involves research on ethnic/eponymous city divinities by means of archaeological analysis, epigraphy and iconography. Narbonese Gaul is studied in a comparative approach with Northern Gaul.
