Peter Geschiere, born in Nieuwer Amstel, the Netherlands, in 1941. Ph.D. from the VU University, Amsterdam. Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the VU University, Amsterdam.
Fellow (1 September 1980 – 31 July 1981)
I worked on an English version of my thesis on changing political relations in the Maka villages of southeast Cameroon since 1900 (on the encapsulation of the old tribal forms of organization by the colonial and post-colonial state institutions). I also embarked on new research projects, especially on a comparison between the different impact of French colonial rule in NW Tunisia (the Koumirie) and SE Cameroon (the Maka area) – the two regions where I did anthropological fieldwork.
